How many fatal crashes happen where I live?
The federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System counts every crash on a public road that killed somebody, and publishes it by county. Pick a state below to see its totals, the years the record covers, and the counties with the most. Every figure carries the year it counts.
How this works, and where the numbers come from
Every figure comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which records each crash on a public road in which somebody died. It is exported into this repository by a named script, reviewed and committed, so the page is static and a number cannot change between a reader loading it and citing it.
The "latest year" column is the most recent year the export covers, not the current year. Federal crash data runs roughly two years behind, because a fatality is coded only after the reporting is complete. A state's own dashboard will usually show a more recent, less final number.
Counties are on each state's own page rather than here, keyed by FIPS code, because a county name is not unique across the country: thirty states have a Washington County. You are welcome to quote any of it; please cite FARS as the source.
