Check what you were charged for
Compare the bill with the care you received and your insurance explanation of benefits. Ask the provider for an itemized bill if a charge is unclear.
- Your name and the date of treatment
- Services listed and any duplicate charges
- What insurance paid and the remaining balance
Keep one simple record
Put bills, receipts and insurance letters together. Note the date, name and outcome of each billing call. Keep copies of anything you send.
Ask about payment help
If you cannot afford a bill, ask the provider about financial assistance and payment options. Request the terms in writing before agreeing to a plan.
Get answers about your own coverage
Who pays depends on your insurance, the circumstances and applicable rules. Your insurer can explain a coverage decision. An attorney can discuss questions about an accident claim.
