How do I look up a trucking company’s safety record?
By its USDOT number, which is painted on the vehicle and printed on the crash report. The federal safety record is public and free. Search below by name or number among the carriers reporting the most crashes in each state, then open the carrier’s own record at the regulator.
How this works, and where the numbers come from
A USDOT number is the only identifier that reliably follows a motor carrier. It is painted on the vehicle, printed on the crash report, and it is the key to the regulator's own record: the operating authority, the insurance on file, the inspection and violation history, and the reported crashes. That record is public and free, and this page does nothing more clever than take you to it.
The list underneath is the carriers with the most reported crashes, summed across the state exports of the federal crash file. A crash reaches that file when it killed somebody, injured somebody badly enough to be treated away from the scene, or disabled a vehicle enough to be towed. Fault is no part of that test. A carrier appears near the top of this list because it operates a very large number of vehicles, and nothing on this page should be read as saying any company is unsafe.
The right use of it is recognition: if the name on the trailer matches one here, the USDOT number beside it takes you straight to the safety record. The wrong use is treating it as a ranking, which is why there are three columns and no fourth.
