Find out who is calling

Ask for the person’s name, company, contact details and claim number. An adjuster works for the insurance company handling the claim. Know which company they represent.

Ask what happens next

Keep the conversation focused on the information you need.

  • What information do you need from me?
  • What is the next step in the claim?
  • When should I expect an update?
  • Can you send that decision or request in writing?

Make a short note after each call

Record the date, who you spoke with and what each person agreed to do. Keep the notes with your photos, report number and other claim documents.

Ask for an explanation

If a decision is unclear, request a written explanation. For concerns about claim handling, your state insurance department may be able to help. Ask an attorney about questions specific to your legal rights.
